Receiving one of the nine prestigious “I Migliori” awards this year from the Pirandello Lyceum was Philip Frattaroli from Boston’s North End. The annual “I Migliori in Mens et Gesta” award ceremony was held on April 1st, recognizing the best in mind and deeds in the community.
Philip Frattaroli lived above his family’s Hanover Street restaurant for the early part of his life. His father Filippo, a 1989 Pirandello Lyceum I Migliori Award winner, immigrated to the United States in 1970 from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Together with Philip’s mother Anna, the pair raised their children immersed in the family businesses, Lucia and Filippo Ristorantes.
Philip attended Boston College and Suffolk Law School with the intention of practicing business law. Seeing a restaurant space vacant in the depths of the 2009 recession, Philip opened Ducali Pizzeria & Bar. In 2013, Philip bought the East Boston property that his maternal grandfather operated Oscar Woodworking out of for fifty years. The recently completed mixed-use building will be home to Cunard Tavern, Philip’s new restaurant slated to open later this month. Most recently, Philip teamed up with his parents to create Filmark Hospitality Group.
Nominated by fellow North End business owner Dominic Susi, Philip serves on the Board of Directors of Boston Youth Wrestling, is a member and former President of the North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council, ran the 2012 Boston Marathon to raise over $30,000 for the UMASS ALS Cellucci Fund, and was the lead organizer of Boston Stands with Italy, which raised over $75,000 for the 2016 Central Italy Earthquake.

Each year, the Priadello Lyceum seeks to identify and honor outstanding men and women of Italian birth or descent who have made important contributions to American society. The Pirandello’s annual gala event also serves as a fundraiser for several scholarships handed out to worthy high school students.
