This is brief report of what happened at Thursday night’s meeting of the North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA). The group voted to support two of four zoning and licensing applications.

Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt franchise at 283-285 Hanover Street received a supportive 26-10 vote from NEWRA members for zoning relief and a #36A take out request.

Billy Tse Restaurant, 240 Commercial Street, split the membership 18-19, with one vote resulting in an opposing result for its proposed seasonal outdoor sidewalk seating. The request also included an associated amendment for its all-alcohol beverage license to increase seating capacity from 90 to 110. (NEWNC voted to support this request.)

Elaine DiGangi at 9 Cooper St. received a vote of 22-14 from NEWRA in support of zoning variances for a 55′ high residential building which was revised down from 66′ in a previous proposal.

Chris Young, 78-80 Salem St. received a 10-27 vote in opposition to an appeal for zoning relief to add a second story to the existing 1-story building and expand the existing restaurant, Trattoria Pulcinella. (NEWNC voted to support this application.)

City Councilor At-Large Felix Arroyo spoke about his 2013 initiatives including Invest in Boston, Youth Affairs and reducing Air Pollution. The Councilor also took questions from neighborhood residents. No vote was taken … that’s in November.

NEWRA and NEWNC votes are advisory only to city officials that make the final determination. More on each of these will be forthcoming in separate posts.

  1. I think it is wonderful that one of our North End People, Elaine DiGangi got a chance to build rather than some
outsider, who constantly goes after the North End Properties and use them as Cash Cows. Elaine is going to
live on the property, which is great, and I know she will do a great job.
