A new tradition started this year for All Saints Day where eight religious societies came together for a celebratory gathering in Boston’s North End. Known primarily for their feasts and processions, the groups sponsored a Community Mass with Fr. Claude Scrima and Italian music on November 1st at the newly restored Saint Leonard Church. After the Mass, a unique “All Saints” procession commenced through the streets with two marching bands. The participating societies included Societá Santa Maria di Anzano, Saint Joseph Society, Madonna Delle Grazie Society, Saint Agrippina Di Mineo Benefit Society, Madonna Della Cava Society, Madonna del Soccorso di Sciacca Society (Fisherman’s Club), Santa Rosalia di Palermo Society and the San Gennaro Foundation. The Santa Rosalia di Palermo Society held a successful dinner dance and fundraiser on November 10th at Anthony’s in Malden. The Society held its 78th annual procession through Boston’s North End in honor of Saint Rosalie in early September. Photos by Gerri Paladino.
Santa Maria di Anzano was honored in a special Father’s Day procession, having been postponed from earlier in the month due to rain. Starting at Saint Leonard Church, devotees marched with two marching bands through the neighborhood streets. In 1905, a group of ten immigrants from Anzano, Italy founded the Madonna di Anzano Society that continues today. Read More…
