Friends of Christopher Columbus Park Surprise Joan Murphy with Birthday Celebration

The Friends of Christopher Columbus Park (FOCCP) threw a surprise 89th birthday party for Joan Murphy at the park complete with friends, cake and well wishes.

Joan surrounded by many of her FOCCP friends and the Commissioner.

At the party, the FOCCP presented Joan with a certificate thanking her for all her hard work. Joan began volunteering in Christopher Columbus Park after several years of tending a garden with the Fenway Garden Society. The certificate notes that Joan “proves that one person does, indeed, make a difference.”

Joan receives a Certificate of Appreciation from FOCCP Vice President Ann Babbitt (l) and President Joanne Hayes-Rines (r).

Boston’s Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Chris Cook also presented Joan with a Parks Department tee shirt and blanket.

The surprise party was a great success, with attendees as well as passersby wishing Joan the best and thanking her for making Christopher Columbus Park a gem of the North End Waterfront neighborhood.

  1. Happy 89th birthday from a respectful stranger I hope it was a great one, my grandmother’s name is also Joan Murphy (nee murphy), (mom’s side) and she’s just turned 87 a few weeks ago. God bless you many more years to come !!!!
