Was That Really a Bridge Floating in Boston Harbor?

We received several inquires as to the floating bridge that came through Boston Harbor this morning. While it would be nice to think this might be an accelerated attempt to rebuild the Old Northern Avenue or Charlestown Bridge, it intended to be part of a new Long Island bridge, currently being dismantled.

The city closed the Long Island bridge last October when it became unsafe and a scramble occurred to relocate the homeless and substance treatment programs based on the island. Permits for the rebuilding of a new bridge have yet to be filed or approved but it appears this would be one of the sections.

Below, Cary Hewitt captures the moving bridge span as it coasted through the harbor to where it ultimately docked along the Mystic River.
