Addition and Roof Deck on Battery Street Overwhelmingly Opposed by Residents’ Association [Video]

The North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) voted 3-26 in opposition to zoning variances sought at 16-18 Battery Street. Owner Seth Nock was not present at the meeting and was represented by Attorney Daniel Toscano. The application seeks to change the legal occupancy of the existing premises from nine to ten residential units and construct a one story addition and a private roof deck. The rental property is expected to be approximately 55 feet high, before the roof deck and headhouse.

Abutters raised objections to potential issues with the requested changes, including the addition and roof deck. A new neighbor on Battery Street objected to changing the zoning rules that he previously thought protected his interests, including sight views of the Old North Church steeple. Neighbors said they see people with suitcases coming and going from short-term rental listings on internet sites like TripAdvisor and AirBnb.

The proponent’s representative said the owner just recently purchased the property and is looking to improve it. A property manager has also been hired to look after the building.

This application was unanimously supported by the North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) earlier in the week and will be heard by the Boston Zoning Board of Appeals on December 16th for a final determination.

    to cash in by permitting AIRBNBs in our Neighborhood. The World is not the same as we all once.

    minute there is Proper Screening being done for prospective Airbnbs, you are out of your mind.
    Why should we all have to be at risk for the LOVE OF MONEY? Progress should never mean.
    any residents’ quality of life should have to be sacrificed for the sake of GREED. We all have had.
    more than our fair share of this crap.
