The 2014 Columbus Day celebration brought out hundreds to the namesake park as kids of all ages joined in events hosted by the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park. In what has become an annual tradition, the free family day kicked off with a kids parade and promenade through the park. At the conclusion of the parade, there was a short ceremony at the Christopher Columbus statue, including a wreath laying ceremony led by Italian Consul General Nicola Di Santis, Rep. Aaron Michlewitz and FOCCP President Joanne Hayes-Rines. As part of the ceremony, NEMPAC’s singers performed “God Bless America” and “O Sole Mio.”
Entertainment through the day featured performances by Jenny the Juggler, Peter O’Malley the Magician, Big Joe the Storyteller, Jim the Bubble Guy and Stomp! Israeli Style Dance & Body Percussion. Other fun activities included face-painting, NEMPAC’s famous crafts and music table, lawn games with prizes, and tours of a real working Boston Fire truck.

KUDOS to the very talented Matt Conti. What a wonderful recap of a fabulous event. The weather co-operated and joy was everywhere. This Event is the jewel in the FOCCP crown. Every year the very creative and energetic volunteers make their magic and bring the Event to a new level. Perhaps Channel 4 needs to take a better look. Thanks for another memorable Columbus Day celebration.
