City Repairs Tree Stump Hole on Hanover Street

After last week’s complaints regarding an long empty tree stump hole on Hanover Street, we heard from City Hall through Stephen Passacantilli, Special Assistant to the Mayor. The hole has been filled in with concrete as shown in the attached photo. Thus ends the stump hole’s campaign for historic preservation status.

Similar issues can be reported to the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500 or online at Citizens Connect.

  1. Hanover Street is the Main Drag~~~but there are MANY tax paying~~law abiding citizens that live on other streets in the North End! On Fulton Street a month ago they started removing a tree~~~left all the cinder blocks around the square on the sidewalk~~just loose~~~~until someone called, now there are less cinder blocks sitting there but nothing else was done! Start something~~finish it! Accidents just waiting to happen!
In a building next door to me, (139 Fulton Street), in the square that houses a tree~~~that condo association bought medium size dark colored rocks that look GREAT! They told me that the rocks were not very expensive~~~and look very nice!

  2. It is just absurd to fill over a Hanover Street tree pit with cement. I expect a new tree to be planted and the area around to be properly treated with grating flush with the sidewalk height. If this is how the new Mayor is handling things in Boston, I a underwhelmed & have Tweeted chief of staff Dan Koh.

“his has to fall into the lot of Stupidest solution ever. So I Tweeted:

@dank Seriously? Mayor Walsh’s solution to an empty tree pit on Hanover St is 2 fill the hole with cement? cement http://tinyurl.com/k78r4lj “.

Today my response came in, “@PrinceGal don’t worry will receive a new tree in the fall (July and August not ideal times). Temporarily covered so people don’t trip.”

  5. I think this part of Hanover Street, with the restaurant entrance, freedom trail, fire pole and light pole should NOT have a tree, The sidewalk is to congested. Leave it as it is.

  6. In front of 121 Fulton Street the City’s Arborist (did anyone know we had a City Arborist) decreed a tree diseased and had in chopped down. It was a buttonwood tree and sheds its bark as a matter of course and seemed healthier than others on the street. We did not get concrete but asphalt which is toxic ( it is made out of heavy oil) and would hinder the growth of any tree planted as a replacement if that ever happens. A “Tree May Grow in Brooklyn” but it wont on Fulton Street.
