Same Day Trash Pickup Petition Brings Over 700 Signatures to City Hall

On Thursday at City Hall, Toni Gilardi presented City Councilor Sal LaMattina with a petition to keep overnight trash off the streets.

On the petition are 738 signatures of North End and Waterfront residents supporting “Same day trash pick-up” and proposing that trash never be put out on the street overnight. Residents would then be allowed to place trash on the street from 6:00 am to 9:00am with prompt City collections thereafter. (See Petition Circulating For 6am-9am Trash Drop.)

“We had an overwhelmingly positive response from the North End and Waterfront residents. Residents agree something needs to be done and fast. Our streets are littered with debris from garbage bags sitting out overnight exposed to trash pickers, rodents and weather. We understand this is just the first step, but to do nothing would be criminal,” said Toni Gilardi.

City Councilor Sal LaMattina will be calling for a City Council meeting on the subject in December. The hearing date will be announced and open to the public.

  1. “Good Waiters ~~Get Good Tips” Well, we waited long enough, here in the North End !! After years of trying to correct this awful situation, Toni found a loophole in the once unreachable situation ~~ every time we as Clean Street’s members, looked to correct this same problem we went NO-WHERE~~~finally it was found out that the City Trash Contract was up for renewal and when the bids were going out, therefore the opportunity arose !!!

Those residents that oppose this new idea, will soon realize~~~IT’S FOR THE BEST !! Once this new plan is in place, obviously, 9:00 am is only a starting point, and every street will learn about what time their own street will have the collection take place !!! My street may be at 9 am, but another street would be 10:30 am respectively !

Please people, let us stand together and make a positive change here in the North End~~It’s for the better !
    Thank You for listening !

  2. Toni,

Thank you for your dedication in resolving this trash issue. Please know that many North End and Waterfront residents appreciate your sincere efforts in solving this problem. Some people will not like the proposed new schedule but the benefits (mitigating the impact of trash pickers and the rodent problem) certainly outweigh the perceived inconvenience of not being able to put out trash the night before. Again, thank you!!!!

  3. Thank you all for your support but I am just the messenger! This success was the result of the North End / Waterfront residents and businesses sticking together to better our community.

Good luck to us at the City wide meeting. Date to be announced. Hope to see you all there.

Remember, we are all in this together.

    Toni
