Update on Major Development Projects at Government Center and Boston Garden
7:20 PM – 7:40 PM
On November 14, 2013, the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s (BRA) Board of Directors unanimously approved the plans for redevelopment of the Government Center Garage. The project will build 2.9 million square feet of residential, office, hotel and retail space in six buildings with heights ranging from 60 feet to 528 feet. NEWRA had raised concerns about traffic, public transit and shadow impacts, as well as the potential for the complex to be a barrier between neighborhoods, not unlike the present garage.
The BRA plans to seek Board of Directors approvals in December for proposed towers at Boston Garden, 80 Causeway Street (in front of the TD Garden), including approval of the project plans and approval of the developer’s request for property tax relief.
7-11 Store, 340 Hanover Street, Proposed Business Signs
7:40 PM – 8:00 PM
The committee will review the plans for business signs at the new 7-11 store that replaces the White Hen Pantry at the corner of Hanover and North Bennet streets. The committee has also requested information from the 7-11 owner regarding construction plans, opening date, hours of operation and any plans for alcohol sales.
124-126 Salem Street Proposed Building Plans
8:00 PM – 8:20 PM
The committee will review the building plans at 124-126 Salem Street, currently a 13-car parking lot, to develop questions and comments for submission to the owner in advance of a possible NEWRA vote on the project at NEWRA’s December 12 meeting.
Haymarket Square Hotel Development Plans at Central Artery Parcel 9
8:20 PM – 8:40 PM
The developer of a hotel and “Market Hall” at Parcel 9 recently filed a Letter of Intent with the BRA, initiating the Article 80 Large Project Review and related public process. Parcel 9 is the mostly vacant property located on the other side of the Rose Kennedy Greenway and bounded by Hanover, Blackstone and North streets and the Surface Artery. Trash compactors for the Haymarket Pushcart Association are presently located on this property. At this meeting, the committee will begin a detailed review of the plans for the hotel/market complex.
NEWRA meetings are open, and all North End/Waterfront residents are encouraged to attend.
