It was a cold and wet New Year’s Day 2013 for the hundreds that participated in the annual Polar Bear Plunge into Boston Harbor on the South Boston waterfront, sponsored by the L Street Brownies. These images were captured on black and white film. (Photos by Brendan O’Brien.)

Dear Mr. O’Brien,
We are students from Olin College of Engineering in Needham and are taking the User-Oriented Collaborative Design course. We chose winter swimmers to be our target group to observe and later design a product to fulfill their needs. We are deeply intrigued in this specific category of swimmers and would like to learn more! We would like to interview you and possibly observe your swimming routine.
May you tell me a little bit about what open water swimmers you researched or resources you used while creating this article?
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know. I will get back to you as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
John Quinn
