June 2 is, in Italy, the “Day of the Republic,” a recurring national celebration marking the anniversary of the June 2, 1946 referendum that saw Italian voters choose the Italian Republic over monarchy.

Boston celebrated with its own “Festa Nazionale della Repubblica Italiana” on May 29, 2011 at Christopher Columbus Park.

Under the trellis was a typical Italian piazza with various exhibits. There was plenty of music with a selection of popular, modern and classical Italian music. A highlight was a free concert by Antonello Rondi, a Neapolitan singer.

Shown in the video above are highlights from a performance by Eliot School children that participate in an Italian program. In addition, the video shows various scenes from the festivities and speeches by Consul General Giuseppe Pastorelli and other dignitaries.
