Mercato Del Mare, the North End Fish Market (www.northendfish.com), at 99 Salem Street received unanimous support from the North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council to change the use of the building’s basement level to add take-out in addition to its retail food market. The vote came at this week’s NEWNC meeting.
Liz Ventura appeared before the council and said the store, that she operates with Keri Cassidy, was serving sushi but was shut down because the health inspector said they needed a take-out license.
NEWNC President Stephen Passacantilli said, “I like seeing more retail in the neighborhood and I support the request.” Jorge Mendoza added, “the sushi was great and the owners do a very nice job.” He even buys fish there for Monica’s in a pinch. Mario Alfano complemented, “it is the perfect example of a business getting their start in the North End.”
Jorge Mendoza motioned to support the request, Marie Simboli seconded. The council voted 9-0 in support of the application to add take-out.
