Welcome back to our weekly update that highlights some of the cases appearing on 311 in the North End/Waterfront neighborhoods. All 311 cases are public information and can be found at 311.boston.gov.
Playground/Park Clean Up Needed in North End Suffolk County
This 311 user writes, “Who is responsible for keeping this playground/park clean? For months this park has not been cleaned, there are several (deep) potholes in front of the Nazarro Center; leaves all over the basketball court. It’s just a matter of time one of the kids or an elderly person trips and falls because of these potholes. It’s a disgrace that we can’t get anyone to clean this playground on a regular basis. Who is responsible for keeping this playground clean?”

Litter at 340 North St, Apt 1
This 311 user says, “Please have someone clean litter at 336 North St. left by trash men again I can’t keep policing the north end like this you need to speak to the trash people thank you”.

Trash Stored Outside on Archway Street
This 311 user says, “Please note the large amount of trash stored outside at the far end of this alley near the passthrough between Fulton and Commercial Street. This is an ongoing problem.”

I used to live at 336 north. Building should be torn down
The problem is the people who pick through the trash for bottles at night. They tear all the bags open and when you ask them to clean it up they pretend that they don’t speak English. They are disgusting and the city needs to do something about them!
I think this would be less of an issue if more tenants/landlords would consider putting trash out on the morning of pick up vs. the night before. Trash would be out for a much shorter period of time giving trash pickers less time to rip open and rummage through bags which causes the spillage when trash contractors come through for pick up.
In a perfect world that would be great but people should not have to be worried that their streets will be a mess if they put their garbage out the night before. If I have a day off I’m not waking up early to take my garbage out.
Of course. If you have the day off, you could just take five minutes to clean up your sidewalk in front of your building after you get up. Problem solved!
I really feel like this whole non-debate comes down to ownership. I rent my apartment, but I take “ownership” of the sidewalk outside my apartment’s front door. If there is trash, I clean it up. Often I’m cleaning up the trash of the woman who owns my building and my neighbors who own their condos.
If you walk out your front door, see trash, and say: that’s somebody else’s fault, problem, or responsibility – YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.
I agree with Janine, and I would add, you can’t always control the people who pick through the trash, but you can recycle your returnables in a separate bag. You might say, that is too much work , but It is the responsibility of the residents/ owners to clean the sidewalk outside of your building, after trash pick-up. Either way, you own it.
1- property owners are responsible for the sidewalks in front of their building.
2- sometimes the bags are opened for other things, but most of the time it’s for the deposit cans/ bottles… so either separate them as you are supposed to into clear bags or put them in a separate bag so those who need to take them can without causing a mess.
