The renovation of Rachel Revere Park in North Square is essentially complete with some final work being coordinated with the upcoming reconstruction of North Square.
Located across the street from Paul Revere’s House, the $350,000 project was funded by Boston’s Capital Improvement Fund and coordinated by Boston Parks and Recreation Department with Kyle Zick Landscape Architecture.
The park’s completion comes after a design process that included a series of community meetings. The design opened the space, removing the walls and adding three park entrances. The upper section remains a functional area for events and an open play area often used by St. John School students in the afternoons. A stepped down series of benches and sitting areas replaces the high brick walls along North Street and the square itself.
Several new trees were added to provide shading. Having tress on both sides with flexible seating, the stairs are strategically staggered to prevent kids or balls from flowing into the street. Inner wall seating runs along the recreational area. Also, the copper wall plaque in honor of Rachel Revere has also been restored.
The planned reconstruction of North Square by Boston Public Works is set to begin later this year and continue into 2018. [See North Square Renovation Project Starts Fall 2017]. Sidewalks and curb areas around Rachel Revere Park will be completed at that time. Separately, design meetings are expected to recommence this Fall on the reconstruction of Prado / Paul Revere Mall.
