The North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) voted 33-4 to amend the neighbor notification policy to require notification of any zoning, licensing and construction (ZLC) projects by certified mail or first class mail. The notification must be mailed at least 14 days prior to the meeting where the proposed ZLC action will be presented.
This change to the policy has been raised because residents have expressed concerns about leaflets being lost or stolen, so neighbors do not receive proper notice about proposed changes to their neighboring buildings.
The original proposed amendment suggested the notifications must be received by neighbors at least seven days before the meeting. After some discussion, NEWRA determined it would be better to set a required mail date, since it’s easier to track when something is mailed than when something is received. The proposed 7 day notice was changed to at least 14 days, to allow time for USPS processing and still give neighbors ample notice to attend the meeting.
