The NEMPAC Opera Project returned for its 7th season to the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park on Sunday, June 17th, in an annual tradition to provide a free sneak preview live opera performance accompanied by piano including arias, duets, and scenes from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, for hundreds of music lovers in attendance with family and friends!
Picnics, blankets, towels, and lawn chairs spread through the Waterfront park as the audience and passers-by relaxed and were delighted with the talented performers singing this tragic comedy in the original Italian for an outstanding production.
“Every year we look forward to sharing our love of opera with our local community residents, North End / Waterfront visitors, opera lovers, and local artists. We are very proud to bring to the park this quality performance of paid artists. And we are fortunate to receive the support of donors and sponsors, such as Friends of the Christopher Columbus Park, in partnership with the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Special Events, who help make this quality opera accessible to all,” said Sherri Snow, NEMPAC’s Executive Director.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based his masterpiece, Don Giovanni, on the legends of fictional libertine and serial seducer Don Juan. Reimagined as the infamous womanizer Don Giovanni, Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte created a predatory philanderer, consumed entirely by his own desires—leaving havoc in his wake. Don Giovanni is a tale of one of opera’s most infamous and charismatic seducers.
The NEMPAC Opera Project was founded in 2011 with a mission to serve Boston’s artistic community of singers, instrumentalists and artistic staff, as well as the general public by providing affordable opera in urban Boston. This initiative produces operas that excite audiences, artists, and the greater community of Boston.
The NEMPAC Opera Project 2018 Production is led by Rebecca Miller, Artistic & Stage Director, and Dr. Tiffany Chang, Music Director & Conductor. For more information about the NEMPAC Opera Project 2018 Production and its cast, please visit www.nempacboston.org/nempac-opera-project.
