More than half of the individuals taking advantage of discounted parking at the Haymarket Center Garage have been removed from the list following a 5 Investigates report that many are not actually North End residents.
Two months ago, 5 Investigates found that more than 40% of those getting the parking deal of the century – just $5 a day to park in downtown Boston – were actually not eligible. These discounted parking spots are supposed to be only for North End residents, a perk designed to mitigate parking loss due to the Big Dig.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is now cracking down on these parking discounts, scrubbing the list and revoking passes from all those who are ineligible. More than half of the people and all the businesses have been removed. Those getting the discount must now prove they live in the North End on a yearly basis. MassDOT is also getting rid of the monthly commuter parking passes, freeing up space for short-term parking. See more at WCVB5’s website.
