Dr. Jonathan Fine, age 86, former Director of the North End Community Health Center, passed away on January 17, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on March 3rd in the Friends Meeting House in Cambridge.
Dr. Fine grew up in Boston, graduating from Roxbury Latin School. He went on to study at Swarthmore College, Yale School of Medicine, and Johns Hopkins. After studying health needs internationally, he returned to Boston as the city’s deputy commissioner for community health services, before directing the North End center.
While working in the North End, Dr. Fine was asked to travel to Chile to help rescue three physicians who were being detained for treating torture victims under the Pinochet regime. This mission led Dr. Fine to form the American Committee for Human Rights and, later, to co-found Physicians for Human Rights, an international organization that investigates and reports the medical effects of wartime atrocities.
