Now in its 6th year, the Opera Project by North End Music and Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) continues to dazzle. This year, NEMPAC and the Boston Opera Alliance brought Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, to The Great Hall stage at historic Faneuil Hall. The masterfully staged performance with a full orchestra was sung in German with English dialogue and subtitles. Rebecca Miller was the artistic director with Dr. Tiffany Chang as music director and conductor.
Fidelio follows the story of Leonore, a young woman who attempts to save her husband from certain death by courageously disguising herself as “Fidelio” and taking a job as a guard in the political prison where her husband unjustly awaits execution. The human themes of love, bravery, and resilience in the face of adversity are as relevant today as during its Vienna premiere in 1805. After three fully staged performances at Faneuil Hall, the cast offer a free community performance on the lawn at Christopher Columbus Park, Sunday, June 25th, 4:00 p.m.
