Sushi Rock LLC received support this week from the North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) to open an Asian fusion restaurant at 78-80 Salem Street. The location was most recently occupied by the Pulcinella Mozzarella Bar that closed about a year ago. Since then, a second floor has been added to the property.

Nicholas Leo is one-third owner of the planned 2-story restaurant that will have dining bars on both levels, including a sushi bar. The establishment will have a total of 82 seats. Leo also operates the Brickyard in Woburn. Other owners are similarly involved in the restaurant and nightclub business.

Discussion at the meeting surrounded the issue of closing hours, proposed at 11:30 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday and 12:30 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. Abutters asked the new restaurant to abide by the good neighborhood agreement with a closing of 11 pm weekdays and 12 am on weekends. Younger residents spoke in favor of the concept, the proponent and later hours.

The Council supported the transfer of the CV 7-day Malt & Wine with Liqueurs license, 10-0 in a vote that would expand the license to the second floor. In a subsequent vote of 6-4, the Council also supported closing hours as proposed (11:30 Sun.-Wed., 12:30 am Thurs.-Sat.). There are no other restrictions on the license.
