The MassDOT contractor (G.V.W. Inc.) for the Callahan Tunnel Vent Building Project on North Street (not to be confused with the tunnel itself) has posted some construction updates on his web site. He will be posting updates every couple of weeks.
Currently we are removing the exterior brick and block off of the south elevation (back side) and this should be completed in the next 2-3 weeks. During this time we will also be performing selective asbestos abatement. Once this has been completed there will be a week preparing for the delivery of precast panels that are anticipated on site the last week of September. The installation of panels will take a week to two weeks and will be completed by mid October.
Once the precast has been completed on the South side the removal of the brick and block will move to the East side (with the garage door) of the building. Construction of the East side of the building is anticipated to take 2-3 months.
Asbestos Abatement
We have received emails with concern about the asbestos abatement. The asbestos abatement is being performed inside a plastic containment that uses negative pressure to make sure no asbestos particles leave the containment. The asbestos contractor is licensed, insured, and being monitored by a third party asbestos consultant during all work being performed. The consultant is reviewing all on site construction activities for safety (both employees and community), quality of work, and to ensure all applicable regulations are being followed. Any dust that is visible on the project is from the removal of the brick and block that has been tested and does not contain any asbestos.
Updates to the web site will be performed every two weeks from this point forward at this website.
