Mayor Thomas M. Menino could not make last week’s Mayor’s Coffee Hour at Christopher Columbus Park, but that did stop the friendly community gathering. Helping stand in for the Mayor were Property Chief Michael Galvin, Parks Commissioner Antonia Pollak, City Councilors Sal LaMattina, Felix Arroyo and Rob Consalvo along with State Representatives Aaron Michlewitz and Marty Walsh. All participants enjoyed coffee and treats from Dunkin’ Donuts, complimentary plants and fresh fruit from Whole Foods Market.
Tuesday evening’s snowstorm brought snow, sleet, rain and high winds to the North End / Waterfront. It was unpleasant to commute in, but it certainly looks pretty in this photo. The Massachusetts Beirut Memorial at Christopher Columbus Park was buried this winter in snow except for these little wreathes hanging on the branches. There are nine dogwood trees surrounding the memorial, one for each Massachusetts Marine who were serving as peacekeepers and died on October 23, 1983 in the Beirut, Lebanon barracks terrorist bombing that killed 241 Americans.
