“Go Bananas” is moving directly across the street to 64 Salem Street. The neighborhood grocery will continue to be operated by Frank Scire who has been on Salem Street for the last 20 years. At 1600 square feet, the new space is twice as large as compared to the existing location at 65 Salem Street.
The new location is in the condo building that replaced the Dunkin’ Donuts lot which was destroyed by fire. It was noted that the last condo in the building was sold.
“Going Bananas” will continue to sell mostly produce, but with new sandwich and take out offerings such as cold deli. Because of the take-out, the business needs a “change of use” variance from the Board of Appeal.
The owner has no plans to seek a retail liquor license. The store will not have lottery and Mr. Scire agreed not to have sidewalk tables/signs. The hours will expand slightly to add an hour in the morning, opening at 7am and closing at 9pm.
At the NEWRA ZLC meeting, residents were generally complementary of the produce store so this does not appear to be a controversial issue. One abutter wanted to know about the signage. The applicant indicated it would be about the same as it is now on the other side of the street with an additional sign perpendicular to the building.
If the applicant files his paperwork, this issue will be on NEWRA’s October 8th meeting agenda and NEWNC’s October 19th agenda.
