What’s The 311? North End Nails, Commercial Street Sidewalk, and Damage at Christopher Columbus Park

Welcome back to our weekly update that highlights some of the cases appearing on 311 in the North End/Waterfront neighborhoods. All 311 cases are public information and can be found at 311.boston.gov.

North End Nails Allegedly Venting “Toxic Fumes” Through its Building

*Note: This case has been closed due to a duplication of an existing case (since deleted or removed from the 311 website), however, the 311 user reopened the case with a new comment found below. This 311 case does not verify the existence of the alleged “toxic fumes” being found in the building.

“North End Nails illegally venting toxic fumes back into building and into the basement. Replacing toxic air with moldy basement air. Making all tenants in the building sick.”

The original 311 post can be found here. The case was originally submitted and opened on March 12, 2019. The case was then closed on March 13, 2019 with the following message: “Closed with status: Duplicate of Existing Case. 101002842792.”

The case was then reopened later that day on March 13, 2019 with the following message from the original 311 user: “Reopened with status: citizen feedback:. Hi you have closed this case several times because it is a duplicate complaint. But the issue is not resolved and no one has come out to check. People are being exposed to dangerous toxic fumes and no one is responding and just stating no violation found. This is just unacceptable. I’m a tenant in the building and the whole building [reeks] of toxic fumes. They are venting it back into the common area of the building!!! Someone really needs to do something about this because someone is going to get sick. We have already had people vomit from dizziness. Please do something about this.”

311 User Calls For Sidewalk Replacement on Commercial Street

“Entire sidewalk in front of 440 Commercial Street is brick. Some of the bricks are uneven and becoming dislodged making it unsafe for pedestrians. The entire sidewalk really needs to be replaced with a concrete one, similar to all the brick sidewalk that was replaced near the Sail Loft.”
