Petitions for both Citizens Bank and Starbucks at 198 Hanover Street have been deferred indefinitely, as announced at the North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) meeting on Monday night by President John Pregmon.
Pregmon said he spoke to Attorney Daniel Toscano, who represents Starbucks Coffee Company, earlier on Friday and both items were removed from the meeting agenda. Toscano was not in attendance.
Neighborhood Liaison Maria Lanza confirmed that neither Starbucks nor Charter Realty have formally withdrawn the Starbucks proposal, but it has been deferred indefinitely. No zoning board of appeals or licensing dates will be scheduled until they come back with a new proposal or new tenants.
We understand that the Charter Realty, the property owner, and Starbucks are working out terms for a likely withdrawal of the application.
This deferral comes after an intense abutters meeting where many residents spoke out against a Starbucks at this corner location known as the Gateway to the North End. Mayor Walsh released a statement on Friday encouraging the applicant to withdraw the proposal.
On a related coffee chain note, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, located down the block at the corner of Cross and Salem Streets will be closing this Friday. Peet’s opened in the former Goody Glover’s space in late 2015 and was supported by NEWNC at the time.
