In what was billed as the match of the school year, St. John School held a teachers vs. students soccer match last Friday, May 20th at Puopolo Park.
The soccer match was part of our 4th Grade fundraising writing assignment where the students had to come up with ideas on how they can help with a problem in Boston.
The Education for All Children Activist Group decided to host a soccer game that benefitted the Malala Fund. In addition to the soccer game, the students sold t-shirts that were designed by our students and hosted a tag day.
The stakes were high as bragging rights were on the line. The teachers struck early and first in the game with a great goal by Ms. Caitlin Mooney. The students did a great job putting the pressure on the teachers, but in the end, our teachers won with a final score of 3-1. Additional goals were scored by Ms. Amy Tobin and Miss Amanda Finocchiaro. The only goal for the students was scored by Francesca Brocca.
Well done to the St. John School teachers on their win. The soccer game was exciting and very entertaining to say the least. Our teachers need to start practicing as our students will be looking for redemption next year!
Other fundraising events for the writing assignment included the Homeless Activist Group which put together bags for the Ronald McDonald House, the Littering/Pollution Activist Group which held a water bottle and paper recycling event, the Global Warming Activist Group which hosted a bake sale during the soccer match with the proceeds going towards “e” inc, the Animal Abuse Activist Group which sold bracelets during the soccer match with the proceeds going towards the MSPCA, and finally, the Endangered Animal Activist Group with put together a raffle with the proceeds going to the World Wildlife Federation.
The students raised over $700 for the Malala Fund. We want to thank everyone who participated in, and supported, the match. Great job to everyone on their fundraising projects!

I commend all of the students for their outstanding efforts in performing this assignment, Well done!
I am a little confused as to why the Homeless Activist Group put together bags for the Ronald McDonald House. Unless the mission of Ronald McDonald House has changed, the families staying in these facilities are not “homeless”. They are staying in a Ronald McDonald House while they have a sick child being treated and do not have the financial resources needed to stay in a hotel during their child’s treatment.
