North End Historical Society Goes Live

There are many neighborhood groups in the North End/Waterfront area, but one that has been long in coming is a historical society. This is ironic for a community with such a multitude of historical destinations.

Thanks to interested residents including local historian, Alex Goldfeld, a North End Historical Society was finally established and recently announced its first program on April 24th (see below for details). The website for the group is www.NorthEndBoston.org, which includes their membership form. Individual membership is $20. Contributions will fund scholarly research, public programming, website improvements, and the publication of the Journal of the North End Historical Society.

The mission of the North End Historical Society is to collect and preserve the historical record and material culture of Boston’s North End, to preserve, catalog, and present these resources in service of the wider community through publications, lectures, educational programs, and exhibits. The mission includes ongoing efforts to bring together scholars and individuals knowledgeable and interested in all aspects of the North End’s history.

Meet in courtyard BEHIND Boston’s Old North Church, 193 Salem Street

A “Holy Thursday” walk to five religious and historical locations in the North End. At each site we will share the local history associated with the building and grounds as well as share some of the origins and background associated with the Holy Days of Christianity, including the old tradition of visiting 5 (or 7) churches on the Thursday before Easter.

The tour is free, but space is limited, so please register by e-mailing the NEHS at NorthEndHS@gmail.com

The program will be facilitated by local historian Alex Goldfeld and Dr. Mary Kantor, who is currently the Catholic Chaplain at Phillips Academy in Andover.
