A new community group, We are Boston’s Waterfront, introduced themselves at the April 2018 meeting of the North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA). Co-founder Sydney Asbury explained the organization emerged from the “Save Our North End Waterfront” effort that successfully worked to stop a hotel proposal at Lewis Wharf in 2016.
Community members have expanded their mandate to include other waterfront neighborhoods as part of their planning and development initiatives. “If Charlestown, North End, Downtown, East Boston and the Seaport work together, our collective impact will be much greater,” said Asbury.
One of the group’s first efforts is taking place in Charlestown by working with engineers to prevent sewer backups during storm flooding events. The group is also circulating a petition calling for a moratorium on future waterfront development until the City of Boston puts a plan in place to protect existing structures from rising sea levels.
