Water Damage Forces I AM Books to Temporarily Close

I AM Books, an independent bookstore on North St. in the North End, is temporarily closing for the week after a significant water leak over the weekend. The bookstore will be shut between Wednesday, April 18, and Friday, April 20, to undergo repairs to ceilings and walls.

The water leak caused by flooding from an upper floor unit resulted in the loss of over 120 books and at least 50 gift items, along with damage to furniture and bookcases.

“It’s unfortunate, but it could have been so much worse, so we must remain positive,” said Nicola Orichuia, co-owner of I AM Books. Orichuia came into the store at 7 a.m. on Saturday after receiving a call from a neighbor about the water problem. The bookstore remained opened through Tuesday, April 17, while technical assessments were being made on the necessary repairs inside the unit. “We’ve been told it will require at least three days to get the first phase of repairs completed,” said Orichuia. “We definitely want to be open for the weekend, since we have several events going on on Saturday and Sunday. We might need to close another day or two next week to complete the job.”

I AM Books opened in Oct. 2015 by Nicola Orichuia and Jim Pinzino. Follow the bookstores updates on Facebook.

  1. Sorry about the water damage Nicola… your positive attitude is a breath of fresh air ! The store is an oasis in the midst of busy city life. I, as well as many others, enjoy the atmosphere and the selection of books and gifts.
