Tradition of Santa Claus Arriving by Helicopter Continues in Boston’s North End [Photos]

Santa Claus made his annual helicopter ride from the North Pole to the North End on Sunday, December 17th. After the 40+ year tradition became at risk, a group came together to organize the event for the neighborhood children. The helicopter landing was also combined with annual Santa Skate Toy Drive, bringing hundreds to the holiday gathering.

Festivities began at Puopolo Park on Commercial Street as Santa’s friends and elves sang Christmas & Holiday favorites with the North End Marching Band. After landing from his exclusive helicopter, Santa joined in a short parade to the Steriti Skating Rink for the Columbus Day Committee’s Annual Santa Skate Toy Drive. Dozens enjoyed skating, holiday music & caroling, face painting, refreshments and raffles with a huge collection of donated toys.

This year’s festivities were celebrated in memory of Jimmy Pallotta and organized by the North End Columbus Day Celebration, North End Athletic Association, Representative Aaron Michlewitz, Senator Joe Boncore, Marquis Health Services, Saint Anthony’s Club & the Madonna Del Soccorso Society. The committee also thanks the Department of Conservation and Recreation and Mayor’s Office of Sports, Tourism & Entertainment & The Boston Bruins.
