June 2017 Residents Association Meeting Community Reports [Video]

The June 2017 meeting of the North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) covered several community reports. A summary is shown below. Use the timeline to jump to different topics of interest.

(02:45): Parks & Open Spaces – Robyn Reed

  • Prado improvements meeting coming later in June, TBA on Parks and City websites.
  • Tree cages are being installed on Hanover street and being watched on Commercial Street.
  • Sunday, June 25th at 4 PM there will be Opera at Christopher Columbus Park
  • Saturday, July 1st, from 12 PM – 4 PM there will be an Independence Day celebration
  • Free Summer Concert Series every Thursday in July hosted by NEMPAC
  • The Zip Line is now open on the Greenway

Parks and Open Spaces meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 PM at the Mariner’s House. The next meeting is in August.

(05:25): Zoning, Licensing & Construction Committee – Victor Brogna

  • 32 Charter Street wants to expand a first floor residential unit. The apartment as it is now is a three bedroom and one bathroom unit. The plans to change the apartment call for three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. It is thought to potentially be student housing, but some NEWRA members believe it could be used for Air BNB

(07:10): Summer Party Volunteers Needed

  • The Residents’ Association Summer party needs volunteers to set a date and form a committee around organizing the party.

(07:38) Public Safety Report – David Marx

  • Year-to-date in BPD District A-1, crime incidents are up 2% over the last year.
  • Over the past month, there was one robbery, one aggravated assault, one break-in and four larcenies.
  • The Tall Ships event on June 17th are seen as a High Risk event. The police presence will be equivalent to Super Bowl-like security. Over one million visitors are expected by the organizers of the Tall Ships event.

  • Lewis Wharf Hotel will not be built as proposed.
  • There is still land that can be built on in that area, and the Residents’ Association is watching closely for an activity.

The Next Residents’ Association Meeting will be on Thursday, July 13, 2017, 7:00 PM at the Nazzaro Center, 30 North Bennet Street.
