Imagine Boston 2030 representative, John Fitzgerald, led the first ‘visioning session’ in the North End as part of Boston’s first citywide planning effort in 50 years. The North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) and audience members participated in a group activity to prioritize challenges and opportunities as part of the process.
At the top of the priority list were transportation/traffic/parking, schools/education and housing (including affordable). Demand for housing is being driven by smaller household size as well as population growth (expected to be 700,000 by 2030). Regarding education, residents voiced the need for a walkable high school. Other issues discussed included parks, development, sea level rise and some residents also voiced preservation of the North End’s history as a priority.
