Animal Control Unit Discusses Enforcement of Dog Leash Laws [Videos]

Animal Care and Control Interim Director, John Meany, spoke in the neighborhood this week to address resident concerns about enforcement of dog policies in the North End / Waterfront. Meany spoke how the unit’s policies have changed toward a more progressive approach in caring for animals.  The meeting took place on September 11, 2014 at the North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA).

Regarding enforcement of leash laws, Meany said the city usually cannot respond to individual cases but is willing to assign patrols in problem areas. Officers generally try to approach dog owners before issuing tickets.

Residents identified Christopher Columbus Park as a problem off-leash area especially between 5:30 p.m.and 7:30 p.m. Specific concerns included a new large dog organization and professional dog walkers that are not complying with various ordinances. Meany said he would assign patrols to the park.

Residents were encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500 with specific complaints.
