Reported incidents from the past week in the North End / Waterfront area are listed below, courtesy of Boston Police District A-1.
Unarmed Robbery
03/03/14 9:45pm
Female victim reports while walking from a store after grocery shopping she was pushed to the ground by 2 female and a male suspect at Cooper and Endicott Streets. The suspects then grabbed her cell phone and debit card. While the victim was on the ground, the 2 female suspects kicked her before fleeing on foot.
Additional incidents:
Interesting, the Boston Police Department has no money or resources to have more presence in our neighborhood, but they have money and officer representation, to oppose a legal and hard working family from opening a business in our community
Huh?
Don’t walk alone. How hard is it?
Don’t walk alone at 9:45 PM??? that’s a joke right?
A woman got robbed & assaulted on Endicott & Cooper St. and they are looking to put 3 30 a.m.
liquor licenses in this City. There is something definitely wrong with this picture. If our Police
can’t handle what is going on now in this neighborhood, could you imagine what is going to
happen at 3 30 a.m. Who do we call then, the National Guard. SICK AND GETTING SICKER
BY THE MINUTE. Marty, I hope you are reading the Police Blotters.
Those two issues have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with each other. 330am closings and a 945pm robbery nowhere near a bar or restaurant? Police can’t be everywhere at all times.
Why don’t the police set up decoys on the streets and get these thieves?
I have lived in the north end all my life and there is a lot of strange characters around here my Mom is at n e nursing home and I call my Neibor to pick me up when it’s dark this is pathetic I agree with everyone who posted yes where are the police? As for the Mayer having bars open until 3:30 I can’t believe it Somebody must be getting their palms greesed Just my view
what a disgusting shame.. never in my lifetime was it unsafe to walk the north end at 945 pm.. now before we hear its not like the old days no its not and I understand that trust me..i unfortunately moved out and were im living now its not the same as it was 30 years ago.. either..we never had polkice presence in the north end because none of this ever happened and if someone god forbid tried to even rob you it was known who it was and it was taking care of.. were are all the police? I can only imagine if they pass the law to have bars closing at 4 what mayhem it will be.. I know that things change and in my lifetime I never thought that the north end would change the way it has.. makes me very sad..
I don’t see much correlation between this reported violent robbery and a proposal to extend bar and restaurant operating hours.
Sean
If you think about it logically there is a huge correlation between the two.
Bars would be open until 3:30 …. Now that would bring a entirely different and drunk element into our city and neighborhoods. You would also get a host of drug dealers around because now it’s become a “party town’….. And then people would get attacked and assaulted due to the crazies !!! It’s very simple
Yes thinking about it logically, bars staying open an extra 90 minutes will turn me from a normal guy who likes having a few beers on a Saturday night into a drug talking, violent crazy person.
I think a major benefit of bars staying open till 3:30 am is that it will stagger the drinking of people. The biggest problem with closing every bar in the city at 2am is the huge crowds of drunk people all pouring out onto the streets looking for limited cabs and food at the same time, it only causes problems. Have you seen how hard it is to get a cab at 2am on a Saturday night? This also leads to a lot more drink driving.
Ridiculous to correlate a robbery at 9:45 pm to drinking hours, talk about hysteria. Are you saying if the bars were closed at 1am that this robbery wouldn’t have happened? Do you think this robbery occurred because the 3 scumbags were drinking and they drunkenly decided to rob somebody?
Please logically tell me how this robbery correlates to a proposal to extend bar hours to 3:30am?
What makes you think he pouring out of patrons at 2AM won’t happen at 3:30? People will drink until they are told to go home….when I was 25, that’s what I did.
I think Sean just wants to stay out and party more. I hear there’s a nice place for rent over in the Allston/Brighton neighborhood. You should check it out.
Thanks for the rude comment.
Yes, everybody who wants the bars to stay open later is a college aged student who wants to ‘party’.
Sean, the problem with your logic is that you are talking about “yourself”. Perhaps what you say is true about that extra 90 minutes and a few more beers but everyone out at that time of early morning is neither a “normal guy” or a “young professional”. Boston is a relatively safe city but it’s obvious that you are too young to understand that alcohol is the cause of so many unfortunate problems late at night. I really don’t think that you are giving any thought to the people who have to live with this every night of the week in the North End. The only way you will ever comprehend the issue is when you either come across a drunk at 1:a.m. and he assaults you or you buy a condo and have to put up with the noise at 3:a.m. like everyone else.
Statistically speaking, the vast majority of Bostonians drink alcohol. The vast majority of Bostonians are also not criminals. So why would you assume allowing Bostonians to drink in a bar for an additional 1.5 hours (note that this is something they’re probably already doing at home), would suddenly lead those currently law abiding drinkers to become criminals?
“Statistically speaking the vast majority of Bostonians drink alcohol”. First of all, I’m not sure where you got your statistics and second, they aren’t drinking it after midnight and especially not after 2:a.m.
A small minority of Bostonians are the only ones drinking after midnight and many of them are making all of the noise and raising hell which is irritating to the rest of us.
Whats with all the condescending comments towards people who favor later opening hours? Its just plain rude and it does nothing to foster healthy debate.
When you find needles in the street, you start seeing crimes like this. The two go hand in hand. The North End needs to get serious about drug distribution and use in the neighborhood.
But bars close at 2am, that keeps the drug dealers out of the city no?
I’m interested to hear why you would like to see the bars open till 3:30. I’ll completely withhold judgement on your answer, but I’m curious.
Hi JC,
Although I feel a face to face conversation would be best for this sensitive topic, let me take a shot a briefly listing out the benefits to extending operating hours in Boston.
– Extending hours of operation of bars/restaurants will make the city more attractive to young professionals.
– The typical 9 to 5 work day no longer exists, many young, educated residents work long or later hours. Extending operating hours means they would have more options to eat and socialize without the constraints of time set forth by historically puritanical regulations.
– If we can attract more educated young professionals to live here the city will have an easier time attracting businesses who want to tap Boston’s talent pool, thus increasing the tax base.
– There is a theory that the 2am closings (last call is often well in advance) send massive cowards out in the streets creating numerous problems (noise, saturation of taxi/livery cab fleet, strain on policing fights and drunk driving).
o Not all revelers will be out partying until 3:30am. With a later closing the hope is the crowds will dissipate steadily throughout the night (*earlier into the morning).
o If you have ever been to New York City you can see that just because bars remain open later, it does not mean they all stay populated.
– The city and state relies heavily on tourism. This extension will make Boston a more attractive destination for international travelers and conventions alike.
I understand why those who are already disturbed by what they deem an increasingly ruckus urban atmosphere may oppose this but I passionately feel this city needs to re-evaluate some of its policies that conform to a more puritan time in order to stay competitive as American cities are experiencing n era, opposite of the Suburban Sprawl.
Thanks,
Sean
Fair arguments…
There was a day where I would have been right there with you on all of this. Guess I’m just getting old.
Isn’t Boston typically one of the youngest major cites from a demographics standpoint? I think the selling points for young professionals are working as is…I’ve never heard a young person say “I’m moving out of Boston because I can’t get a drink after 2AM”.
Statistically, Boston is very young, and statistically the majority of those people end up moving away. I think just about everyone who grew up around here can attest to that. Personally, about half the people I grew up with, went to elementary school with, and went to high school with have moved away to Chicago, San Fran, Denver, Portland, Atlanta, Dallas, DC, etc.

Conclusion
In Norway, each additional 1-hour extension to the opening times of premises selling alcohol is associated with a 16% increase in violent crime.
Even as a male, I am always looking over my shoulder if I’m out alone after 9PM…any day of the week. Sad but true….if I were a woman, I would not feel safe walking alone after 9PM…people may “thumbs down” this post but assaults would disappear if people paired up.
Are you serious? You make it sound like the neighborhood has morphed into Mattapan. It is still the safest neighborhood in Boston.
Not if you were one of the victims of an assault.
There’s a guy that used to post on this site about how the NE doesn’t need a police presence. He would state over and over how the resources should be used elsewhere. You’ve been awful quiet lately….
Even if someone did walk me home, he/she would have to walk home alone. How would that solve anything? Try it for a couple weeks and see how difficult your statements are.
Not if you get walked home by a male….ask ANY police officer and they will tell you to pair up late at night. Why is that such a foreign concept to people? I’ve never read of a sexual assault when the woman was not alone. It’s not always easy but…would you rather see a woman get assaulted when there is a remedy?
Just a random idea:
What if there was a group of responsible people who volunteered a specific time period during the week to escort our North End neighbors from point A to point B.
For example: a resident could call up a hotline, click an App or go to a website and say I’ll be at Haymarket at 1045pm and would like someone to walk with me to ### Salem St. The volunteer on duty would respond and the pair would walk together from Haymarket to Salem St. Obviously safeguards and other such things would need to be worked out on both ends of the service but it has to be better than walking alone. I would volunteer some of my time to simply walk with someone. Would also be a great way to meet your neighbors as well.
Start a Neighborhood Watch Program working with local police. http://www.usaonwatch.org/register/default.aspx
To all of you who do not think bars staying open until 3 30 a.m. will not be a problem, and
people will be staggered, you are wrong. Our police can’t control the drunks leaving our
local establishments now, you want to put more pressure on them, by allowing a 3 30 a.m.
liq. extensions. We who consider the No. End our homes & will be here until the day we die have
had to endure far more than what you are aware of. The No. End is at the effect of liq. lic. and
noise, more than any part of the city, and we are probably the most congested and smaller
than any other neighborhoods. There are a lot more incidents in the
No. End that have not been disclosed. One incident was of a Christmas Party in the early
to middle part of Dec. where they were drinking for in & around 9 hours in a Hanover St.
establishment & a fight broke out at the bar & ended up on the street. 2 – 3 weeks ago on
a Wed. Night (11 p.m.) a man was robbed at No. Square & I did not see that posted either. One
might ask, where am I getting this information from, the bartenders that work in these
establishments, and they have told me stories that will let your head spin. I do not want to end
up in any great debates over this, you don’t have to believe me, attend a Safety meeting
the 1st Thursday of the month at 6 30 at the Nazzaro Center and find out what our Police have
to say about liq. lic. Bartenders that work in these local establishments told me Hanover St.
on Fri. & Sat. from Midnight – 3 a,m. is insane. We are working on a Video showing
Hanover St. & surrounding areas to prove to all of you that doubt these things exist, and
therefore, you can see for yourselves. I don’t know exactly when this video will be ready, but
I can’t wait to expose it. Have a great night sleep this weekend and Happy St. Patrick’s
Day.
Might be a good idea to get as many concerned residents as possible to walk over to City Hall
and ask the newly elected Mayor a few questions. Of course, the first would be
“Why would you want to extend drinking hours until 3:00 a.m.”?
Is the glass half full or is it half empty?
Well I guess it depends on what side of the bar you are standing on?
Will Boston become another out of control substance abuse city?
Or will its citizens with some wisdom, nostalgia, pride, and a moral compass band together to save this historic gem?
Can this economic freight train be stopped?
Gentrification = Segregation?
Tax revenue? or Blood diamond?
Boston was voted the drunkest city in america in 2011!
Will we ever be civilized again?
Do we really need to make the list of top ten cities in America for substance abuse?
What truly makes a world class city?
People and businesses will always migrate here for our great resources, some of the best in the world, education, medical, financial, technology, arts, politics, and religion.
Luring people or business with extended intoxicant privileges will not make you a world class city.
Most of us are not out dining or bar hopping at 2 or 3:30 in the morning.
What the hell do we want to self destruct for?
We have one of the strongest economies in America today.
Has anyone forgotten why people truly migrate here.
We are a unique city, steeped in history, safe and easily accessible with all the amenities and aforementioned resources.
We become a world class city by expanding the arts, entertainment, convention centers, tour companies,. duck boats , and Mayor Menino’s 2007 Bike Boston program.
The resources and leisure’s people can enjoy without being under the influence of any substance.
We attract people and business with the quality of life, and great resources we can provide in an urban setting.
The problem is that we abandoned the simple core moral values of the family structure that built this great city and country.
Dozens of studies from the CDC, Human and health Services and several other federal and local agencies have shown that alcohol consumption and abuse has had devastating health and morbidly rates on society.
> In 2006 the economic cost of excessive alcohol consumption was 223.5 billion.
> More than 1.2 million emergency room visits.
These were the results of men consuming more than 5 alcoholic beverages, and women consuming more than 4.
> Unintended injuries included, traffic injuries and death, falls, drowning, burns, and firearm injuries.
>Violence, including intimate partner violence and children maltreatment reports concluded that 35% percent of the offenders were under the influence of alcohol. studies have shown that two out of three intimate partner assaults are alcohol related.
>STDs, unwanted pregnancies, miscarriage and stillborn statistics all rise from alcohol related sexual behavior.
>Alcohol poisoning, a medical emergency that results in loss of consciousness, coma, respiratory depression and deaths have risen in young people and binge drinkers.
> Social problems included, aggression, depression and family issues.
>Alcohol more than any other substance is the catalyst for unruly and lewd behavior, and acts of vandalism and violence, these numbers increase in binge drinkers, and younger demographics
These are just a few of the negative effects that this particular substance has on health and society.
Who is really mining these diamonds?
Well that depends on what side of the bar your standing on?
Where there is money! you will certainly find the absence of moral obligation.
Hey just check with your local police, fire, EMS, and emergency rooms, they will give you the true statistics, and only 25% of incidents ever get reported.
Well I stand on the side of moral consciousness!
I stand on the the side of Boston staying a unique and great city!
I stand on the side of attracting people and business morally!
I stand on the opposite side of the bar from Martin Walsh! on this one.
I say to the people who will not come to Boston because they cannot consume alcohol in restaurants and bars until the wee hours in the morning, DON’T COME TO BOSTON!
We don’t want you!
Sean, you made a few valid points, but promoting longer hours of substance abuse to compete to be a world class city is a very flawed diamond.
We are a world CLASS city! we are Boston!
Do not knock puritan pride or culture, it is the very foundation civility.
Respectfully,
Richie M.
