Lee Napoli, Boston’s undisputed Queen of Pastry for more than 20 years, has made a career out of setting trends, not following them. Until now.

The movement of high end chefs across the country, seeking ways to fulfill the desires of mainstream diners, has been fully established by such first-name-only talents as Danny, Bobby, Jasper, Mario, Ming and Hubert. Their casual outposts have provided appealing alternatives to fine dining in the nth degree at their primary restaurants. Each has enjoyed tremendous critical and financial success.

The NY Times, Food & Wine, and other influential food media have noted the trend, and so did Lee Napoli, who dreamed of bringing her locally famed, top quality baked goods to the masses. With the late May opening of BREAD + BUTTER, she finally will.

BREAD + BUTTER is an artisan bakery-cafe designed to showcase Lee Napoli’s library of sweet and savory recipes, developed during her years at this city’s pioneering high end restaurants like Maison Robert, Anago, Metro, and Sandrine’s.

BREAD + BUTTER allows the casual diner to experience a full menu of creative, from-scratch food at popular prices, and in a self-service atmosphere.

BREAD + BUTTER features Napoli’s ethereal éclairs, croissants and napoleons; as well as other essential urban fare like sandwiches on fresh baked bread, unique entrees, exceptional coffee, crisp salads, and of course, hand-dipped chocolates from Napoli’s well-established Chocolee Chocolates brand.

BREAD + BUTTER harnesses the experience of Lee Napoli – President of the Boston chapter of Les Dames D’Escoffier, proprietor of Chocolee Chocolates, and founder of the New England Pastry Chefs Guild – and translates it into the perfect breakfast pastry … the saltiest BLT … the creamiest quiche … the ripest tarte tatin … and other daily treats that Bostonians crave and deserve.

BREAD + BUTTER is a 2,500 sq ft café and bakery at the corner of Cross and Salem streets, where the North End meets the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Passers-by can watch Lee Napoli at work daily through a large window that connects the kitchen to the street.

BREAD + BUTTER opens early and closes late seven days a week, and its location is easily accessible to residents and workers from five distinct Boston neighborhoods.

  1. Sounds like a winner from both an offerings standpoint and from a business experience standpoint as well. If anyone can succeed in that location she should be able to. I really look forward to it and wish her all the best!
