MassDOT Traffic Advisory For October 5-6 Weekend Work on I-93N Tunnel Exit to Zakim Bridge

MASSDOT TRAFFIC ADVISORY: WEEKEND WORK TO RESTRICT LANES ON I-93 NORTHBOUND
Crews to Replace Concrete Pavement with Hot Mix Asphalt from Tunnel Exit to Zakim

BOSTON — This weekend, MassDOT will address a 600 foot section of deteriorating concrete pavement from the I-93 Northbound exit of the O’Neill Tunnel to the southern joint of the Zakim Bridge.

This work will require lane closures beginning at 10p.m. Friday evening until Saturday morning at 10a.m. and again Saturday evening at 10p.m. to Sunday at 10a.m. One lane of traffic will remain open to motorists at all times.

Motorists should plan ahead and anticipate delays beginning as far back at the Braintree Split, especially on Saturday morning, due to the scheduled lane restrictions. Those destined for Logan Airport should closely monitor traffic conditions, allow extra time or seek an alternate route. Drivers destined for points north of Boston may want to consider using I-95. Neighbors may notice increased noise levels during construction.

The concrete pavement, or micro-silica, is cracked and separating from the concrete slab below. This causes potholes to form and chunks of concrete to loosen resulting in the need for emergency repairs, patches and maintenance. Replacing the entire section with hot mix asphalt will allow MassDOT to avoid future problems with the micro-silica surface.

Earlier this summer (June 16 and 17) MassDOT replaced the concrete pavement with hot mix asphalt on the I-93 On-Ramps from the Sumner Tunnel and Haymarket.

On Fri. night October 5th at 10p.m. MassDOT will close the 3 LEFT Lanes of I-93 NB. This includes On-Ramps from Essex Street to I-93 NB, and Atlantic Avenue to I-93 NB. All ramps and lanes are scheduled to be open by 10a.m. Saturday Morning.

Ramp Detours:

  • North on Atlantic Avenue to the I-93 NB On-Ramp at Haymarket
  • Rte 1 NB traffic is directed to the Rte 1 NB On-Ramp in City Square

On Sat. night October 6th at 10p.m. MassDOT will close the 3 RIGHT lanes of I-93 NB. This includes On-Ramps from Essex Street to I-93 NB and Atlantic Avenue to I-93 NB. All ramps and lanes are scheduled to be open by 10a.m. Sunday Morning.

Ramp Detours:

  • North on Atlantic Avenue to the I-93 NB On-Ramp at Haymarket
  • Rte 1 NB traffic is directed to the Rte 1 NB On-Ramp in City Square

This work is weather dependent.
