It is an odd day to have an election, but the State primary elections are on Thursday, September 6, 2012.
*Important for independents: Voters enrolled in a political party (Democratic, Green-Rainbow or Republican) may only vote in that party’s primary. Unenrolled voters (registered voters not enrolled in a political party commonly referred to as “independent”) may vote in the primary of their choice and remain unenrolled after voting.
On the Democratic side, there are a few notable contested races on the ballot for North End / Waterfront voters.
The race for Clerk of Courts in Suffolk County (Boston, Revere, Chelsea, Winthrop) has been quite visible in the neighborhood. On the Criminal side, the North End’s Robert Dello Russo has aggressively campaigned in the neighborhood and is running against incumbent Maura Hennigan. On the Civil side for Clerk of Courts, Michael Joseph Donovan is running against Michael Dash.
The North End’s City Councilor, Sal LaMattina, is running against Patty Campatelli for Register of Probate. Should LaMattina win, a special election is likely early next year to fill the vacant District 1 (North End, Charlestown, East Boston) city council seat.
On the Governor’s Council, 6th District, Terrance (Terry) Kennedy is running against Francis Xavier Flaherty, Jr.
The Ward 3 Democratic Committee has also issued their endorsements.
This is the first election since the 2010 census redistricting that moved the North End / Waterfront into the 8th Congressional District, held by U.S. Congresssman Stephen Lynch. Previously, the neighborhood was represented by Rep. Mike Capuano. This year, there are two Republicans, Joe Selvaggi and Matias Temperley, vying to take on Lynch in the general election on November 6, 2012.
Polls are open 7am to 8pm. Check our Voting Information page for polling locations in the neighborhood.
