Trashy Summer Saturday in North End

It’s a hot, sweaty … and trashy Saturday in the North End, as shown by these photos taken today by Damien DiPaola, lifelong resident and owner/chef of Carmelina‘s and Vito’s. He comments on Facebook that “The Pigs have taken over” and attributes it to both residents and visitors. The next residential trash pickup is Monday morning.

  1. I saw the same mess on the corner of Hanover and Prince (in front of Chinese Take Out) yesterday morning. The mess had been moved to the gutter just behind the Big Belly. I immediately called the Mayor’s Hot Line. When I went by there in the evening the trash had been removed.
As you can see from the photo, the trash is mostly take way stuff!
I urge everyone to call the Mayor’s Hotline to report this sort of mess and trash that is not properly bagged or put out on the sidewalks a day or days ahead before the designated
trash day pick up. Also, report rodent sightings: time and place.

    1. Thanks, Patricia, for this information. I have added the number to my contacts list on my cell phone. Do you think we need more trash cans? Ruth M

  2. Once again! Where are the trash recepticles? Containers with lids ez fix to the bags lining the streets.
Why is this so complicated? If there are no places to dump trash, its going to end up on the street.
Let's make our tax $'s really do something constructive. Keep up the picture taking, the squeeky wheel.
    gets the oil.

    1. I don’t know about Greenough Lane…BUT there is at least one trash receptacle on every block of Hanover St. Maybe Public works needs to empty them more frequently and residents need to stop putting houshold trash in the solar compactors. If we get more receptacles on Hanover St, there will be no place to walk and the lazy slobs who throw trash on the street will throw trash on the street even if a trash can jumps up in front of them. ISD needs to do a better job of walking the streets of the North End on the weekends and ticketing the building owners and condo associations who allow their residents to put trash out at the wrong time. If people are going to take pictures they should download the Citizens Connect app for the iphone or android and send the photo with address to the Mayors hotline. THen nobody can say it wasn’t there.

  4. Didn’t they try the trash receptacle method one time? I think the argument against it was that it attracted animals. I agree that trash cans would get the trash off the streets however it would also allow people to throw trash in there any day they like which may increase the rodent population and so on.

This is still pretty bad, associations should bear the penalty for trash strewn outside their buildings, my association has a recycling room but its only recycling. For trash you need to wait until MWF.

  5. I think another part of the problem is the people who go around picking through trash looking for cans. They go up to bags and kick them to see if they can hear the sound of cans inside. If they think there is a can inside they will just rip open the side of the bag and dig in which leaves a big hole for trash to escape all over the streets!

    1. This is true. However…the real issue in these pictures were lazy tourists and residents who were probably too drunk to see the giant trash barrel right in front of them on Hanover St and just dumped their pastry boxes etc on the ground and residents of Greenough Lane who put trash out on the wrong night and left it there all weekend. The trash picking problem will only get worse now that the geniuses in the State House passed (or are still trying to pass) an expanded bottle bill to include water, juice and sports drink bottles. They thikn that this will lead to more recycling instead of a cash windfall for the bottle and can scavengers and lots more torn open bags.
