USS Constitution was underway in Boston Harbor today. The ship honored Gold Star Families – families who lost loved ones in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom – and also honored the Navy’s victory at Midway Island during World War II.
The Constitution exchanged 21-gun salutes with Fort Independence on Castle Island. Fort Independence is a state park that served as a defense post for Boston Harbor at one time.
Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year. For more information on the ship, visit http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution.
