Richard Shiner, 44, Suspect of Church Robberies

Captain Bernard O’Rourke of Boston Police District A-1 confirmed at tonight’s Public Safety meeting that officers arrested Richard Shiner, 44, who was charged with the recent burglary of St. Leonard’s Church in the North End.

Police issued a photo yesterday asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect who was found this morning on Boylston Street. Police charged Shriner with burglary and larceny counts for break-ins at St. Leonard’s Church and St. Anthony’s Shrine. They believe Shriner may also be responsible for other church robberies including St. Stephen’s Church on Hanover St. and Mission Church in Roxbury.

Police noted that Shriner knew the inner workings of the churches and was able to take advantage of the open access offered. Shriner was identified as homeless.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
