Federal prosecutors added a new count of extortion to previous charges against Sal DiMasi, former Massachusetts House Speaker. The new indictment came today in Boston’s US District Court alleging a hidden stake in Genesis Management LLC. Genesis was a real estate management firm formed by DiMasi’s accountant Richard Vitale and two other partners. According to the Globe article, “DiMasi’s lawyer, Thomas Kiley, said today the new allegations were “not a surprise” because the judge had been urging federal prosecutors to file additional charges soon, if they had them.” DiMasi is pleading not guilty to all charges.
Sal DiMasi was House Speaker and 3rd Suffolk District’s State Representative (including the North End/Waterfront) prior to resigning in early 2009.
