Mayor Tom Menino and Mayor-Elect Marty Walsh helped flip the switch on Monday night turning on the thousands of blue lights to create Boston’s iconic holiday scene at Christopher Columbus Park. (See the video.)
After leading a complete renovation of the park thirteen years ago, this will be Tom Menino’s last lighting as Boston Mayor. It was that renovation that spurred the creation of the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park. Today, FOCCP funds the lights among its many efforts throughout the year to benefit the park. FOCCP President Joanne Hayes-Rines and Parks Commissioner Toni Pollak moderated the festivities with a holiday program headlined by NEMPAC students, saxophone extraordinaire, Scott Boni, Magic 106.7 and, of course, Santa! The Greenway Conservancy also opened up the carousel for complimentary rides that night.
After the lighting, Tia’s new owners from the Cronin Group, John Cronin and Ciaran Mc Nelis, hosted the FOCCP volunteers at the waterfront restaurant adjacent to Christopher Columbus Park. The Friends group presented awards to recognize long time officers to celebrate a successful year.
This event was originally scheduled for 2/14 but was postponed due to cold weather. It will take place on Monday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m.! On a day after a drenching rain, members of the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park’s horticulture group waded into the soggy soil and planted 300 daffodil bulbs in the crescent garden near the trellis.
