As it does every year around Memorial Day weekend, Save the Harbor / Save the Bay has issued its latest assessment of water quality for beaches in the metro Boston area. “As you can see, its a largely a “good news” story,” says Bruce Bergman, Director of Strategy & Communications. Bergman provides a few key takewaways:
- Overall water quality was 95% – up a bit from 2017 – which is good news.
- Despite the record rain fall last year (which appears to be the new normal), 13 of the 15 metropolitan beaches scored over 90%, with 7 achieving perfect scores of 100%, which is also very good news.
- King’s Beach and Tenean beach continue to lag behind other area beaches. Though Lynn and Swampscott and Boston Water and Sewer continue to track down and correct illicit connections and broken pipes, it is a slow go and there are no easy fixes. On the bright side, the Boston Water and Sewer Commission has identified a major source in Dorchester, which they are working to correct.
