Boston City Council will be holding a hearing to discuss excessive noise levels in the city. Councilor Edwards, representing District One, agrees this is an important issue for our neighborhood, as we are located close to TD Garden and are also a big tourist destination.
According to the City’s website, any noise louder than 50 decibels (approximately the noise level of a quiet conversation) between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. is considered unreasonable, and anything over 70 decibels (approximately the noise level of a vacuum cleaner) at any time is considered too much, except for permitted construction.

By far, the loudest things on my street (North) are speeding and honking cars.
Never seen a person with such a hatred for vehicles than Jared! Never misses an opportunity! It must be tough for you to walk around all day just looking at cars everywhere you go!
It is tough. If only you knew just how detrimental their advent and growing prevalence has been for our society, economy, and environment. It takes years of research to finally understand because our society has worked so hard to make us believe that cars are a godsend.

I voted “No, I find the area around my home pretty quiet.” That said, cars are and remain one of the biggest contributors to noise in cities–from the running of engines, screeching of worn out parts, and honking of hours. Unfortunately, we tend to ignore them when we think about ways to reduce noise. Instead we only focus on late night revelers.
Can you tell me what street you live on? I d like to move there.
Pleaded for a badly needed, in fact very necessary, SLOW sign on Fleet Street. But to no avail.
I don’t think so at all. I mean we are living in the heart of the city here. We are not living in the burbs. If you moved here expecting peace and tranquility then shame on you.
On the weekends the noise from all the tourists was keeping me up. Nothing a little $15 white noise machine didn’t fix.

Since I live on a street with restaurants, my biggest complaint is the noise from the commercial waste haulers who come at 3 & 4am seven days a week. Why can’t they be put on the same schedule as residential trash removal and stay away until after 7am?
My first guess would be the faster they empty the garbage, the less the rat problem. But then again, that hour of the morning gets them in and out faster. I don’t think they care about the rat issue, so I feel it’s the latter. More profitable at your expense.
What did people expect when they moved to the most densely populated area in New England? It’s a city! There’s noise! Get over it!!!
Gotta agree with you on this one. We should count our blessings. There are parts of this city where the residents live with the sound of gunshots every day and night.

Yes, it is the city and noise should be excepted, but not at 3:00 in the morning ! So because we choose to live in the city we have to ” just get over” the drunken fools, screaming and yelling as they walk home or the obnoxious, drunks after they leave the nightclubs. Who all seem to find the “24 hr” Bakery right smack in the middle of our neighborhood to eat.
( that shouldn’t be allowed by the city , but that’s another story…).
The needless regular use of a gas powered leaf blower by Christopher Columbus Plaza (145 Commercial) is my main complaint. I have no problem with regular city noise.
Leaf blowers, revving motorcycles, and car alarms are the only sounds that are disturbing, and thankfully they are
occasional!
Jared – Come on man, are we really complaining about car noises?! There can’t be more than one vehicle a week causing the noise issues you’ve mentioned. Let’s get real! This simply isn’t an issue worth squabbling about.
The City’s green new deal will outlaw fosiled fueled cars and force people to buy Teslas. Tesla’s CEO likes to smoke pot while he Twitters. Therefore, he must be a good guy.
I don’t live in the NE but close enough to know with all the tourists and restaurants there going to be noise, thank god the NE isn’t Roxbury, Dorchester shootings like MichaelD mentioned. There’s noise near the Garden all the time espically during events. Imagine if there was shooting reported there.
