The NEMPAC Opera Project celebrates its 6th Anniversary Season with a free semi-staged concert version of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park on Sunday, June 25th. Sponsored by the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park, the free community performance is an annual tradition, representing the project’s mission of bringing accessible opera to urban Boston.
“I love that NEMPAC always includes the community in their performances by offering a free show in the park for people of all ages and walks of life to enjoy. Opera must be more accessible in order to stay relevant and thriving, so I am thrilled to be singing for the outdoor show on June 25th!” said cast member Abigail Krawczyńska, who will be performing the role of Marzelline on June 25th.
“Year after year we look forward to our community of families, residents of the North End / Waterfront area, opera-lovers, and local artists to gather together in the park to experience a full opera production. We’re fortunate to receive the support from our donors, especially the Friends of the Christopher Columbus Park who allow this project of quality performance art and music to remain accessible and affordable to all members of our community” said Sherri Snow, NEMPAC’s Executive Director.
Fidelio follows the story of the brave Leonore, who courageously disguises herself as “Fidelio” and takes a job as a guard in the political prison where her husband unjustly awaits execution. With an inventive dramatic structure, soaring score, and captivating heroine, Beethoven’s only opera—an ode to human dignity—explores themes of love, bravery, and resilience in the face of adversity.
Bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair and enjoy this outstanding production in the park!
