This opinion piece explores and evaluates the negative effects that the Government Center Garage has bequeathed upon residents: Government Center Garage has darkened a key corner of downtown Boston for a generation. The 5-acre concrete behemoth spans Congress Street where Haymarket meets the West End. It severs the Bulfinch Triangle from Government Center, and keeps the North End at arm’s distance from Beacon Hill. The garage is an embarrassing throwback to a period in Boston’s history when city planners elevated architectural objects — government buildings, parking garages, empty plazas, or highways — over people. Government Center redevelopment approved
Have you been wondering whats going on with the Government Center Garage? Boston regulators approved a sweeping redevelopment of the Government Center Garage that will demolish one of the city’s most persistent eyesores to make way for a towering complex of offices, residences, and stores. The massive development will reunite the city’s downtown and West End neighborhoods and bring hundreds of residents, shoppers, and daily office workers to a desolate stretch of Congress Street near City Hall. The project calls for six new buildings, including a 528-foot office tower that would be a new beacon on the skyline. Read more at The Boston Globe

I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO IN THE GOVERNMENT CENTER PARKING A STATE AGENCY MOVED IN I WORKED IN ON IT ON THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS PART OF IT AND OTHER TRADES WERE DOING THERE THING MILLIONS WENT IN THERE TO FIX AND UPDATE IT FOR THE AGENCY TO MOVE IN AND USE IT NOW I HEAR ITS ALL COMING DOWN WHAT A WASTE OF TAXES PAYERS MONEY THEY ALL READY KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THAT BUILDING Y WAST MILLIONS TO JUST TROW OUT THE WINDOW THEY COULD OF USED THAT MONEY IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOOD BANKS TO HELP PEOPLE THAT CANT AFFORD FOOD TO PUT FOOD ON THERE TABLE BECAUSE THEY GET PAYED SO SO LITTLE AND AFTER ALL THE TEXSES THERE IS NOT MUCH LEFT AFTER ALL THE. BILLS ARE PAYED IF U CAN PAY ALL OF THEM EVERY MONTH I THINK SOME HEADS IN THE STATE HOUSE SHOULD ROLL AND BE PUT OUT THERE SO PEOPLE CAN SEE WHO OKED THIS WASTE OF MONEY WE NEED ACCOUNTABILITY FOR EVERY MOVE OF PEOPLE IN THE STATE HOUSE DO WITH ARE MONEY REMEMBER ITS NOT YOURS TO DO WHAT U WANT WITH IT ITS US THE LITTLE PEOPLE I SAY THE LAST WORD SHOULD ALL WAYS COME FROM THE HARD WORKING PEOPLE TO SAY YES OR NO NOT THE STATE HOUSE
Frank, I feel the same way about the Greenway & the promises that they made after getting $Millions in taxes matched dollar for dollar by private funding & after 5 years there are two kid fountains & a carousel & now plans of a building a high rise apt. building which is everything counter to what the Greenway was supposed to feature.Imagine leaving Salem St & instead of a bright open area yow will be in the shadpws of some concrete jungle.
….and that carousel was so, so very badly needed too. Worth every penny of the $1.5 million it cost us – NOT
The money for the carousel was donated. It didn’t cost tax payers anything other than giving up the small plot of land for something children and famous seem to really enjoy.
