It was recently asked on this site whether the billboards existing in the North End would be allowed in Beacon Hill? We received an amazingly comprehensive answer from a presumed expert and anti-billboard advocate, Rachel Thurlow of the “Scenic Massachusetts” group. The short answer is “Yes” … they exist in Beacon Hill just as in the North End, largely because the regulations against nonconforming and illegal billboards are not enforced. Earlier this Spring, however, we did notice that some of the Beacon Hill billboards were replaced with large scale public art by the North End’s own Nathan Swain. Many of these billboards are simply inappropriate especially along the greenway. They should have been taken down with the big dig.
