City Councilor-At-Large Felix ArroyoFelix Arroyo, City Councilor-At-Large provided an update on his 2010 agenda at this week’s North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) meeting. He described his interest in heading up the Youth Affairs Committee to help create youth jobs.
Arroyo is also chairing the City Council’s committee on the 2010 census, noting that each person not counted is worth $1,500 in federal funding to the city. He reminded residents that the census is hiring with temporary jobs at $22/hour. More information on Census jobs.
The Councilor-at-Large mentioned several times that District 1 Councilor Sal LaMattina has been very helpful in educating him on North End issues, such as trash and rats.
Arroyo worked with Councilor Mike Ross on putting surveillance cameras in businesses, such as convenience stores, to deter crime incidents such as the recent murder in Jamaica Plain.
NEWNC member Bill Lane expressed concern over the potential library closure of the North End branch. Arroyo said he understood the concern and would even agree to closing one of the three branches in his hometown of Jamaica Plain before closing those that serve entire neighborhoods.

NEWNC member Jon Sproul said he hopes the City Council will make efforts to finding permanent youth jobs, beyond the summer. Sproul is working on a comprehensive youth agenda and noted the importance of working with businesses to provide youth positions. He also encouraged the city to fund youth activity programs in the neighborhoods to keep kids out of trouble.
