Tuesday’s Brief: Election Day, Wharf District Council Meeting, Story Time at the Library

Today is Tuesday, September 24 and it’s Election Day! Get out and vote for Boston’s district and at-large city councilors in today’s Preliminary Municipal Election. Read more details here.

Here’s what else you need to know for today…

Preliminary Municipal Election in Boston. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Elections will take place for at-large councilors, District 5, 7, 8 and 9. District councilor positions will be narrowed down to two candidates, and at-large positions down to eight candidates, for the November 5 election. Read more here.

10:30AM Toddler Story Time at the North End Library. Listen to stories, sing songs, and learn together through movement and play. This story time is ideal for little ones who have started walking or moving on their own.

11:00AM Baby Story Time at the North End Library. Enjoy gentle stories, songs, and lap bounces for pre-walking babies and caregivers.

3:30PM Kids’ Art Afternoon. Drop in after school to explore the textures of different materials and use them to create a collage. Ideal for kids 6-12 years old.

5:00PM Wharf District Council Meeting. The Wharf District Council will host their September meeting on Tuesday, 9/24 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Norman Leventhal Center, 30 Rowes Wharf. See the agenda here.

7:00PM Speaker Series: Plymouth 400. The Harbor Towers Social Committee invites Wharf District community neighbors to a special speaker series event: Plymouth 400 with guest speakers Michele Pecoraro, Executive Director of PLYMOUTH 400 and Steven Peters, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal member and Creative Director for SmokeSygnals, Inc. Restaurant Newcomers Arriving this Fall

Boston.com has put together a list of restaurants opening in Boston this fall, including some new eats at the Hub on Causeway, soon to be “Hub Hall,” the part of the overall Hub on Causeway that houses all of the new restaurants and developments. Read more here.

6:30PM Introduction to Genealogy Research at the North End Library. Learn how to get started with your genealogy research. You will be introduced to available genealogy resources including Ancestry.com, newspapers on microfilm, and city directories. Presented by BPL Reference Librarian Beverly Gill. Thursday, September 26

3:30PM Middle School Book Club at the North End Library. Talk about books and join in fun activities with other middle schoolers! For the September meeting, there’s no need to read anything ahead of time–just come prepared to read and discuss a short story together, to talk about books you enjoy, and to choose October’s title.

6:00PM Urban Renewal Community Meeting. The Boston Planning & Development Agency invites surrounding stakeholders to a community meeting regarding updates to the Government Center Urban Renewal Plan Area. Read more here.

6:00PM Salsa Dancing at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Learn to Salsa with instructors from Metamovements Latin Dance Company. Live music will be provided by Manolo Mairena & His Salsa Report! The lesson and dance are FREE, no partner is necessary, and beginners are welcome! Lesson is from 6:00pm to 6:45pm and dancing is from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
